July 2025 Update - Scotti Romberg
Ward 27C Vice Chair
Update from Scotti Romberg - Dem 27c Vice Chair
Dear Democratic Neighbors,
We are at an unstable point in our Democracy, with Trump and his 2025 gang exerting control over our Federal government. As we know, Trump and the Republicans passed the Big Bad Ugly Bill, which drastically decreases funding for education, foreign aid for poor countries, scientific research, solar energy, and Medicaid/SNAP for the less fortunate. And increases defense spending by $150B to over $1T, and increases the overall budget for immigration and border enforcement, including ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to around $170 billion over four years.
Key components of the anti-immigration bill are:
$45 billion for the expansion of immigrant detention centers
$29.9 billion is allocated towards ICE's enforcement and deportation operations
$30 billion is allocated to hiring 10,000 additional ICE officer
NM – includes detention centers near Dona Ana, Luna and Hidalgo counties.
A recent SCOTUS ruling revokes bail for immigrant detainees, resulting in possibly millions being held in detention, waiting for hearings that might take years. Immigrants who worked in construction, restaurants, hotels and agriculture will be pulled off the streets and incarcerated indefinitely. Political enemies could be next – this is the beginning of a police state.
NM will be impacted by the estimated $900B cut (over the next 10 years) for Medicaid and SNAP:
Nearly 112,000 residents in New Mexico could lose health coverage due to stringent reporting requirements
Those who were on the ACA will pay a higher deductible and premium
15 NM hospitals are at risk of closure, especially in Gallup, Taos, Las Vegas and Clayton
An estimated 58,000 NM residents will lose SNAP benefits.
Nearly 26,000 New Mexican could lose their jobs
Trump’s reckless tariffs have already cost New Mexican businesses $81.5 million
New Mexicans’ electricity bill will rise 24%
The State will have to pay 75% of administrative costs as opposed to 50%
Medicaid and SNAP major cuts will start in two years, so that the pain will be felt only after the next Congressional election.
If we think our situation is bad now, it is going to get a lot worse. That is why we are reaching out to you today. The Trump administration is a BIG FAT BETRAYAL. Betrayal of: environmental protections, rule of law, healthcare, social safety net. Protections like FEMA. We have a MAFIOSO who feels he can extort newspapers, TV networks, universities…..and he is.
This year we have two elections: the Mayor's race and the District 7 School Board. School board elections are important for training future politicians. The Republican candidate, Courtney Jackson, is a member of “Moms for Liberty” (M4L), the far right group that is an American political organization that advocates against school curricula that mention LGBTQ rights, race and ethnicity and discrimination of all kinds, cloaked in the disarming phrase, parental rights. In the last school board election, we were able to vote out a M4L member in District 2. District 7 has a tougher incumbent to replace in Ms Jackson. The Democratic Party supports Kristin Wood-Hegner , who believes in education for all, without banning diverse curriculum or books.
We understand the frustration of the present political climate. The best way to deal with these times is to work with like-minded individuals who care about our community and draw strength from one another.
That is why we are reaching out to ask you to join us. We will be having a meet, greet and coordinate effort picnic on August 24th. Details forthcoming.
Thank you,
Scotti Romberg

Dear Ward 27C Democrats,
Last week I was at the monthly Neighborhood Association meeting for City Council District 4[1]. The meeting’s program hosted all the NM State Representatives and Senators who live in District 4. Each official expressed one win and one loss of bills they introduced this last session. What took me by surprise was all of them stated the following:
· Right now, in June and July, legislators are hashing out what Bills will be introduced, passed, and moved out of committees (and to the next step for passage)
· Right now, in June and July, it is being decided which Bills will be introduced but essentially ignored and die in committee.
· Does Lobbying During the Session Work? All of them conveyed that lobbying any legislator, to support or pass a bill, during a legislative session is pretty much futile. What Bills that will be passed out of committees long before the session starts.
In other words, negotiations of what is to be passed are going on months earlier (like NOW) long before the Legislative session starts. So, if constituents want something passed, they need to start lobbying Legislators right now, in the summer.
Given that information I am now on a mission to ‘pester’ Legislators to address and solve one issue I am compassionate about - the Health Care Profession shortage here in New Mexico.
Alarm! NM has an aging physician population: Did you know that about 40% of New Mexico’s physician are 60 years or older, they will retire. AND the older a MHP is the higher their malpractice insurance premiums? These incentives providers to retire earlier or move out of NM.
And the question needs to be asked, ‘Why is the aging NM Health Care workforce not being replenished by younger Health Care Workers?
The answer is simple:
· High MPI Discourages Health Care Provider to move to NM. We need to reform the state’s medical malpractice act, New Mexico has the second highest number of medical malpractice lawsuits per capita in the U.S. The 2025 Senate Judiciary Committee failed to put a cap on attorney’s fees, put a cap on punitive damages and reforming malpractice lawsuits. These reforms are already in effect in other states.
· Join all ten interstate healthcare worker compacts – Allow medical professionals licensed in other state to practice in New Mexico via tele-health.
· Creating a NM centralized credentialing system to reduce administrative burdens on doctors and other health care professionals and make it easier for patients to keep their providers when their insurance coverage changes.
Who is Addressing this Problem? - The NM House passed seven bills in 2025 that would promote more Health Care Professionals to practice here in NM. These House Bills were sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee where they sat! Evidently, the back room deals made in the summer of 2024 had put a halt on what medical reforms were to be made to recruit more Health Care Providers here. Why? Probably the strong arm of the Malpractice Lawyers had a say in it. (They earn big bucks suing Health Care Providers.)
Right now, in June, members of our state legislature are meeting to discuss what will be introduced, and then passed, in the 2026 Legislative session.
Deals are now being made in committees, before the 2026 Legislature begins. Consequently, this is the time to contact your legislators and express your concerns. And specifically, we need to start hounding the Senate Judiciary Committee to pass bills that would help solve the NM health care crisis. Contacting these Senators need not be in your District for your voice to be heard.

Dear Ward 27C Democrats,
It has been a depressing first 100 days into Trump’s presidency. The good news is historical precedence indicates midterm elections (i.e. 2026) generally favor the party not in power. This means the Democrats have a high probably of flipping the house in the 2026 election. We need to make sure that a blue wave will occur in the house. We, in CD 1, are so lucky to have Melanie Stansbury as our Representative, she is a star and will undoubtedly be reelected! Of course, I will donate to Melanie’s campaign (through the now targeted ACT Blue website), to ensure there is plenty of funds promoting her reelection.
For New Mexico CD2’s house seat, there is a different story. Currently New Mexico’s CD 2 Representative is held by Gabe Vasques. Last year he one by a 4.2% margin, a slim one, but impressive when you consider that Trump won his district by only a 1.9% margin. Political analysts consider his seat a ‘toss-up seat’. There are four respected analysts that I found enlightening and reveal how close the NM CD2 race will be in the 2026 elections. I am providing hyperlinks to all four reports (press the control button and click) Maps from two of these reports I am providing with this newsletter, the other two can be accessed through the provided hyperlinks.
After reading how slim the New Mexico CD2 House race will be, I will be donating to Gabe’s campaign. I encourage you all to donate to his campaign as well.

Dear Democrats of Ward 27C,
Spring Salutations to you. This is my first letter as your Ward Chair. I have served as Ward Vice Chair for the past four years and am now graduating to Ward Chair. have big shoes to fill left by Scotti Romberg, who is switching places with me and now Ward Vice Chair.
I enter this position when our democracy is being tested to the max and is in peril of being lost. Now is not the time to be passive. We all need to act. As citizens of New Mexico, the United States, and as Democrats, we must be informed, active, and involved. What can you, me, all of us do? Get involved, whether it is the simple act of calling or emailing our two Senators, and Representative. (I have included their phone numbers and emails below).
Even our own Democratic majority state legislature has not been effective in passing needed bills. Of all the legislation introduced, only 16.4% of the bills introduced were passed. Why?? most likely because we all did not call, write, or personally contact our NM Senators or Representatives. It does make an enormous difference to ‘make good trouble.’ We now need to roll up our sleeves more than ever and get involved: write letters, mail post cards, email, make phone calls.
So, in the next few months or so I will be posting how we all can meet, get involved, and make good trouble.
Sincerely,
Kathy Economy

Dear Members of Ward 27C,
This will be my last newsletter as your ward chair. I have been Precinct chair for the old 427 for two years and the Ward chair for the last four years. I have come to realize that getting folks together for monthly ward meetings to engage them to get out the vote hasn’t been easy or effective. Even though when the time comes to help candidates we have been engaged and have worked to help support Democratic candidates and push for Democratic values.
I have come to the conclusion that asking people to come to a meeting for the sake of coming to a meeting is not productive or effective. I am suggesting that the new Chair look at his or her roll as the “INFORMER” of the ward. We have an email BLUEPOWER27C, that I have been using for years to inform you, encourage you, motivate you and support you. This email list currently has over 100 names on it, even though there are more Democrats in the district and growing all the time
That being said we do need a Ward Chair and Precinct Chair and CCC members so that we can elect County officers. And those CCC members vote for SCC members who will ultimately vote for new leadership in the state. It is probably not a secret to many of you that I have felt that the current Party Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer have disappointed me with their lack of leadership and transparency.
There are new people running for these State Party Offices. In order to get the new people elected, we need SCC members to vote for them. How do we get SCC members, we have to vote them in. Who votes for them, ward chairs, precinct chairs and CCC members.
THAT IS WHY I AM ASKING YOU TO RUN FOR OFFICE !
I feel that if you want to make a difference, you need to join a caucus or organization that has like minded people and a structure already formed to advocate for people, new regulations, and democracy.
These are just a few of the organizations that you can join that are already active:
Indivisible -Albuquerque https://indivisible-albuquerque.com
Environmental Justice Caucus DPNMejcaucus.org
NM Verterans and Military Families Caucus https://nmvetscaucus.org
Adelante Progressive Caucus https://adelantecaucus.org
Plus there are many others, like the Labor Caucus, Fuerzas Unidas Caucus, Native American Caucus and others. You can find them at the Democratic Party website. www.nmdemocrats.org.
So with that being said, RUN FOR SOMETHING.
Remember, Right Matters
Respectively,
Scotti Romberg – SCC Member 2023 to 2025
2024 - End of Year
Dear Ward Members,
Another year has gone by, with such hope and promise we all had, to
only to be consumed like the ashes from a fire. Our legislators worked
hard, we worked hard to continue the work, working as hard as we could
and ultimately, the forces from the other side were greater than we
thought. It is hard to be satisfied that we kept New Mexico BLUE, when
we lost the US House, US Senate and the White House. But as we all
know “despair is not an option”.
I read a quote somewhere that said popular immiseration equals life
expectancy. Immiseration is defined as the process of impoverishing or
making people worse off, often associated with the exploitation of
labor and the extraction of surplus value in capitalist systems.
I read that in 1946, President Truman appointed Eleanor Roosevelt to
be a delegate to the newly formed United Nations. At the first meeting
of the Commission on Human rights, Mrs. Roosevelt .became the Chair of
that commission. They wrote thirty articles that followed established
that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
without distinction of any kind. The eight countries that abstained
from signing were South Africa, Saudi Arabia and the six countries
from the Soviet Bloc, all others voted for it including the United
States.
It seems so frustrating that after Trump was voted out in November of
2020, we made such gains and now that he has been elected again, it
seems that it will be dismantled piece by piece. As hard as I might
try not to give up, knowing that we have no choice but to press on, I
look for inspiration from various sources.
I read a quote from the incoming Progressive Chair of the House
Caucus, Representative Greg Casar, (D-TX). He said,” So when we hear
Republicans attacking queer Americans again, I think the progressive
response needs to be that a trans-person did not deny your insurance
claim -big corporations did, with the help of the US Republican
Congress. We need to flip the conversation on those who started the
divisive attacks in the first place.
I read another quote from Former President Obama. He spoke of
pluralism in the modern era. He said to stand firm on the idea of
democracy, which is to build coalitions around taking action on issues
that matter to the American people, without regard to personal
identities or political affiliation. Pluralism comes from recognizing
that in a democracy, power comes from forging alliances and building
coalitions, making room in those coalitions not only for the “woke”
but also for the waking. The power of Pluralism is that it can make
people recognize their common experiences and common values. That is
how we break the cycle of cynicism in our politics.
This sounds rather simplistic, but it will be much harder to achieve.
But what choice do we have? Our challenges are huge. Our tasks are
many. The livelihood of the next generation rests on our actions. We
have a decision to make, do we crumble in defeat or do we resist,
revive and redouble our efforts to make this a better world for those
who come after us? I ask you.
I wish you all peace and happiness in this new year.
Dear members of Ward 27C
It has been a difficult couple of weeks, I know that some of you have
done a lot of things to improve the lives of New Mexicans by
canvassing, calling, writing postcards, or taking people to the polls
and let us not forget voting. It disheartens me that the
disinformation machine, which is massive, was able to misinform half
of the country with information that we all knew was a lie. We knew
what would happen if trump and his minions got into power, because
they came right out and said it. I do not know what the answer is to
combat the lies from FOX, the right wing supposedly news
organizations, podcasts and social media. One thing I know is that
there is too much money in politics. With the two billion dollars the
Harris Walz team raised, it was not enough to change hearts and minds.
The blame game will go on for a while. We are indeed in need of some
deep introspection. Fortunately we did our part, we have a full
Democratic delegation to go back to Washington, to hopefully counter
and perhaps work with some Republicans who care more about our country
than they are afraid of trump and the MAGA base. I can tell you that I
worked very hard and the fear I have for our country sticks in my gut.
This is a time of year where we should give thanks to all the good in
our lives, the friends we have, the partnerships we have developed,
the things we have learned, the people we care for and those who we
love.
I don’t know about you, but I will be taking time off for a mental and
physical break from all things politics.
I hope that you have a good end of year, however you celebrate the holidays.
Sincerely,
Scotti Romberg
Ward Chair 27C
Dear Friends,
It definitely has been a whirlwind 4 weeks. From the depths of despair
to the rooftop of elation. I don't know about you, but I feel a new
lightness in my being, and a strong motivation to make sure we win
this election from the White House down to our State Senators and
Representatives. The purpose can not be clearer, we know what is at
stake, and we know what we need to do.
I have attached an article written by Heather Cox Richardson,
Professor of American History. I have edited it for clarity. But if
you did not know what you are fighting for, you will when you finish
this one page.
I urge you to get involved, phone bank, knock on doors, lit drop,
contact the Bernalillo Democratic Party if you do not know where to
start at info@bernalillodems.org. There is so much to do and so many
ways you can help. All of us can make a difference.
Andele Pues,
Scotti Romberg, Ward Chair 27C
Excerpt From Heather Cox Richardson
Under the direction of President Joe Biden, over the past three and a half years the Democrats have returned to the
economic ideology of the New Deal coalition of the 1930s. This week’s convention showed that it has now gone
further, recentering the vision of government that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s secretary of labor, Frances
Perkins, called upon to make it serve the interests of communities.
Biden set out to prove that democracy could work for ordinary people by ditching the neoliberalism that had been in
place for forty years. That system, begun in the 1980s, called for the government to allow unfettered markets to
organize the economy. Neoliberalism’s proponents promised it would create widespread prosperity, but instead, it
transferred more than $50 trillion from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%. As the middle class hollowed out,
those slipping behind lined up behind an authoritarian figure who promised to restore their former centrality by
attacking those he told them were their enemies.
When he took office, Biden vowed to prove that democracy worked. With laws like the American Rescue Plan, the
Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, the Democrats directed
investment toward ordinary Americans. The dramatic success of their economic program proved that it worked. On
Wednesday, former president Bill Clinton noted that since 1989, the U.S. has created 51 million new jobs. Fifty million
of those jobs were created under Democratic presidents, while only 1 million were added under Republicans—a
striking statistic that perhaps will put neoliberalism, or at least the tired trope that Democrats are worse for the
economy than Republicans, to bed.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s nomination convention suggested a more thorough reworking of the federal
government, one that also recalls the 1930s but suggests a transformation that goes beyond markets and jobs.
Before Labor Secretary Perkins’s 1935 Social Security Act, the government served largely to manage the economic
relationships between labor, capital, and resources. But Perkins recognized that the purpose of government was not to
protect property; it was to protect the community. She recognized that children, women, and elderly and disabled
Americans were as valuable to the community as young male workers and the wealthy men who employed them.
With a law that established a federal system of old-age benefits; unemployment insurance; aid to homeless,
dependent, and neglected children; funds to promote maternal and child welfare; and public health services, Perkins
began the process of molding the government to reflect that truth.
Perkins’s understanding of the United States as a community reflected both her time in a small town in Maine and in
her experience as a social worker in inner-city Philadelphia and Chicago before the law provided any protections for
the workers, including children, who made the new factories profitable. She understood that while lawmakers focused
on male workers, the American economy was, and always has been, utterly dependent on the unrecognized
contributions of women and marginalized people in the form of childcare, sharing food and housing, and the many
forms of unpaid work that keep communities functioning.
This reworking of the American government (is) to reflect community rather than economy.
Walz personifies this community vision. “[G]rowing up in a small town like that,” he said, “you'll learn how to take care
of each other that that family down the road, they may not think like you do, they may not pray like you do, they may
not love like you do, but they're your neighbors and you look out for them and they look out for you. Everybody
belongs and everybody has a responsibility to contribute.”.....

Dear Friends,
For those of you who saw the debate between President Biden and Former President Trump, or tried to see some of it but could not bring yourself to see only a part of it, I share your concern, panic and dread. Trump lied on average, every two minutes. Can we all remember that he lied over 33,000 times while he was in the White House, that he appointed three conservative judges who have already shredded precedent and killed Roe v. Wade, among voting rights, the government’s ability to enforce it’s regulations and eliminate more personal rights. The Supreme Court wants to take away all ability for the Executive branch to enact laws concerning the environment, regulation, human rights. And Mr. Trump wants to be king, dictator and oppressor.
This election is not just about voting for the man at the top of the pyramid. We have to look at his whole administration. The president appoints his staff, all the cabinet positions, attorneys, analysts, advisers. It is some number north of 4000 people who are chosen by the president. The president carries out his policies with the advise of people who are experts in their field.
We know what kind of people the other guy will surround himself with, people who want to destroy this country, along with our freedoms and the progress we have made. He has already told us he will dismantle everything with the implementation of his Project 2025. He will weaponize the Department of Justice to go after all those who oppose him. He will use cruelty at every turn. Those in his inner circle will delight in the power bestowed on them, until that power turns against them.
I ask you all to think carefully of all the good that has been done under Joe Biden and his administration. Think of the Supreme Court, thanks to the Heritage Foundation and Citizens United , and it’s grinding march to take away our voice and our freedoms. The Supreme is about to rule that the Department of Justice over reached its authority on the convictions of the mob that stormed the capital ( lest we not forget, that Trump sent out the National Guard to harass and disburse the protesters at Lafayette Park). The Court could over rule the convictions of the insurrectionists and possibly give Trump immunity. Chances are very real that the court will have one or two more appointments for new Justices, in the next 4 years. What do you want to see, rulings against all of us and this planet, or rulings for big corporations and the fanatical right wing Billionaires. We have to vote for decency, democracy and the rule of law. We have to vote to elect a House and Senate that will implement laws that will codify those policies. We have to re-elect Joe Biden. We must vote for democratic candidates from president on down. WE MUST LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE.
So I ask that you think very carefully how you will vote, if you will vote or you will passively stand by the sidelines and let the bullies take over this country.
Respectfully,
Scotti Romberg, Ward Chair 27C

News Letter for 27C
Dear Fellow Democrats,
The primary is over and the Democratic candidates have been elected for the General Election:
Senate District 18-Natalie Figueroa, Senate District 21- Athena Christodoulou and House District 27 – Marian Matthews. Even with all the hard campaigning, participation was only about 22%.
May I remind everyone that this election is extremely important. The Heritage Foundation is still funding radical right wing Republicans in local races, because that is where the gerrymandering and right wing Congressman and Senators get voted in. They are also pushing the Supreme Court hard to the right, so that if the right wing agenda can not be created in Congress, It will happen in the Supreme Court. R- Nella Dominici ( former Hedge Fund CEO ) is running against Senator Martin Heinrich, Yvette Herrell is going after Gabe Vasquez. Yvette who did nothing for CD-2 in her one term as Congressperson while Gabe has done a lot.
The young voters are idealistically uninspired about Biden. But Trump and the far right policy makers are pushing hard to make the next trump administration more Right Wing Radical, Christian Nationalist intolerant, with a stronger Executive Unity government. Trump and his ilk will use the courts and the justice department to go after President Biden, the Judiciary, The FBI, Homeland Security and tear up the Constitution into shreds. Good Bye America, Land of the Free!
On June 5, the S&P closed at a record high 5354 points, the NASDAQ hit a record high 17,187 and the DOW ended at 38,807. If the Republicans were seriously concerned about the economy, they would be jumping up and down at how good things are. The economy grew 272,000 more jobs. Wages grew 4.1%, inflation is at 4%. But that is not the reason why Republicans want control. They want to dismantle the FBI, the Justice Dept, Homeland Security, Intelligence from all branches of the armed services, Energy and the Treasury. They want to cut taxes on the very rich, go back to supply side economics, which does not work, bailing out corporations does not help working families. Getting rid of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and any other social program that helps the common man only drives a bigger wedge of economic disparity. And further discontent. The power hungry want more power.
Can you believe it, Byron Donalds praised the Jim Crow era in American History, because it kept Black Families together. Seriously? The Senate voted to filibuster the vote on protection for the right to have contraception.
The Rabid Republicans want to pull us back to the 19th Century, this country will be unrecognizable, if Republicans are allowed to win. We can not fail to win the White House, the Congress and our own Legislature.
So as we take a break from campaigning, I urge you to talk to your neighbors, children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews and tell them how huge the stakes are. They all must come out and vote.

🌹🌿🌻🌹🌿🌻🌹🌿🌻
Dear Members of Ward 27C
May 10, I was invited by Precinct Chair Diane Gunn Miles, to join her to hear a presentation from Ned Price, the current Deputy to the UN Ambassador, Linda, Thomas Greenfield. Mr. Price was invited to speak to “Global Santa Fe”. To my surprise, Santa Fe is home to lots of ex- governmental officials: ambassadors, nuclear strategist, spies….all very intriguing! As Mr. Price spoke, he shared that he worked in the Obama Administration as a CIA analyst. And left government work when *trump was elected. And then came back for the Biden administration, as a NSA spokesperson, and then State Department spokesperson and then to the UN. His wealth of knowledge was immense. He shared the morning briefings at the White House would last two hours or more, everyday, there was constant communications with all the security agencies, workings behind the scenes regarding Gaza, Ukraine, Cuba, Yemen, to name a few. The hour and one half flew by. The information came flooding out like Niagra Falls. It was truly awe inspiring. Ned shared the information that parts of the State Department were gutted during the Trump administration.
Trump has said in his project 2025, he will fire all civil servants, people like Ned Price, who have 20+ years of experience in government, security and diplomacy. I bring this up because elections DO MATTER. The President is responsible for hiring 10s of thousands of employees who are responsible to very important issues. The career civil servants have “ institutional knowledge” which is invaluable when dealing with very difficult and dangerous situations. This is no time for amateurs or yes men or women.
I understand many people may think President Biden is too old. But with his vast knowledge and experience, he has been able to navigate the tricky waters of divided government. I realize that many people are very upset about GAZA, and the horrific situation regarding the Palestinian people. The protests have been working and President has changed his stance.
But, right now, we have an existential threat to our democracy that will be dismantled if *trump gets re-elected. We have seen this man’s irrational behavior before. I remember having high blood pressure for 4 years, the inhumanity of *trump’s administration, the erratic and irresponsible behavior with Putin, Kim Jung Un, Ben Salman, denying climate crisis, giving huge tax breaks to the top 1%. The failed policies and response to Covid. Over 1,000,000 people died because of the inept and inexperience of the *trump administration. If you think it was bad before, it will be MUCH worse the next chance he gets.
So I am asking all of you, pleading with you, you must vote for President Biden. Talk to you children and your grandchildren and tell them what a disaster it will be if Biden does not get elected. Tell your nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews that NOT voting, or voting for an alternative to President Biden, is a vote for *trump. IT IS CRUCIAL they understand what is at stake.
That is my ask of you. Please.
Thank you,
Scotti Romberg

Have you ever thought, How did we get into this mess. Crazy Republicans, dysfunctional Congress, a criminal running for the highest office in the land? The only thing I can say is that we have been in trying times before and we were able to get through it before, we can get through it again.
I find solace in reading Heather Cox Richardson’s “ Letters from an American”. Her historical knowledge and her skill at being able to connect the past to current political conditions, shows me that if we care about our democracy, and ACT, we can prevail.
February 25, 1901, financier J P Morgan’s men filed the paperwork to incorporate a new iron and steel trust. March 5, the announcement came that JP Morgan was overseeing the combination of companies that produced two thirds of the nation’s steel into one company, United States Steel Corporation. It was a huge financial endeavor. President McKinley was being sworn in for the second time on March 6, 1901 along with his new Vice President, Theodore Roosevelt. McKinley was a champion of big business and believed that the role of government was to support industry, dismissing the growing demands from workers and farmers. In September of 1901, and unemployed steelworker assassinated McKinley and Roosevelt became president. Two months later JP Morgan and railroad magnates brought together the nation's railroad interests, creating a new conglomerate, the ”Northern Securities Company”.
The so-called “ damned Cowboy” Roosevelt, as he was called, said that the government should start cleaning up factories and limiting hours for women and children, and that it should reserve natural resources for everyone rather than allow them to be exploited by greedy businessmen. He used carefully phrased wording to bring up issues as to not tip his hand. Roosevelt went on a speaking tour to explain why he went after the Northern Security Company by using the Sherman AntiTrust Act of 1890. He told audiences that he was not trying to destroy corporations, but rather he wanted to make them act in the public interest. It was written in the Boston Globe, “ Justice for all alike – a square deal for every man, great or small, rich or poor".
By 1912, Roosevelt had come to believe that a strong federal government was the only way for citizens to maintain control over corporations. Roosevelt had come to believe that a strong government must regulate business. “The absence of effective State, and , especially, national restraint upon unfair money-getting has tended to create a small class of enormously wealthy and economically powerful men, whose chief object is to hold and increase their power. After all, Roosevelt said, The object of government is the welfare of the people.
Now doesn’t that sound like President Biden. Now Biden is no “damned cowboy”. But I see a parallel between these two leaders who believe that the object of government is the welfare of the people. Whether we are in rural or urban, farmer or laborer we all deserve to be protected by our government, who should be working for all of us.
That is why we have to continue to work hard and share this message and get democratic candidates elected up and down the ballot. The stakes are too important, and big business wants to take us back to the 1900s. We can not let that happen. There is so much riding on this election. Be an advocate for democracy for all. Get out and share the message and make sure that you and everyone you know goes out and votes.

Strangely, this does not seem much different from 2023, and yet another year has rolled over into a new calendar. So I look at this new year with fresh determination and commitment to do my best to save Democracy in this country. Lofty goals, I know. But as I see it, we have no choice.
So I go to my scholar of choice, Heather Cox Richardson and glean some kernels of wisdom to share with you.
Biden said.
America, as we begin this election year, we must be clear Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot. The alternative to democracy is dictatorship – the rule of one, not the rule of ‘We the People
Today, we’re here to answer the most important questions. Is democracy still America’s sacred cause? This is not rhetorical, academic or hypothetical. Whether democracy is still America’s sacred cause is the most urgent question of our time. And it’s what the 2024 election is all about.
Officer Michael Fanone (whom rioters beat and tasered, giving him a traumatic brain injury and a heart attack) said on January 5,2024, to Emily Ngo, Jeff Coltin and Nick Reisman of Politico:
I think it’s important that every institution in this country, every American, take the responsibility of upholding democracy seriously. And everyone needs to be doing everything that they can to ensure that:
a) Donald Trump does not succeed and
b) the MAGA movement is extinguished.
Jan 6, 2024, three years to the day after the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capital, was to prevent the counting of the electoral ballots that would make Democrat Joe Biden president, officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested three fugitives wanted in connection with the attack.
So let's look how the Pollock Family views January 6 -
Siblings Jonathan and Olivia Pollock (whose family owns Raptured Guns and Knives) described on its Facebook page as a “christian owned Gun and Knife store” in Lakeland Florida. Joseph Hutchison III,who once worked there, are all suspected of some of the worst violence of January 6. The FBI had offered a $30,00 reward for “Jonny” Pollock, while the other two had been arrested but removed their ankle bracelets in March 2023 and fled.
Family members of the fugitives and the other Lakeland residents arrested for their involvement in the January 6 attack on the Capital insist their relatives are innocent, framed by the government eager who is to undermine their way of life. The Pollock family has gone so far as to erect a monument that state it is "in honor of the ones who lost their lives on January 6, 2021”.
Who do the Pollock Family honor or not honor ?
It honors the insurrectionists:
Ashli Babbitt, shot by law enforcement officers as she tried to break into the House Chamber through a smashed window (her family today sued the government for $30 million for wrongful death)
.... and three others
one who died of a stroke,
one of a heart attack, and
one of an amphetamine overdose.
Their monument does not honor the law enforcement officers who were killed or injured.
I share the above quotes not to demoralize you, but to give you a reason WHY it is so important for YOU, ME and everyone else to see WHY we need to get involved in this year’s election, because it is that important.
So what you can participate in?
The 30 day session of the Legislature (which starts January 16)
The Pre-Primary - determines the election of delegates who will vote for the candidate in the Democratic primary.
The Primary - the actual vote to elect the democratic candidates
The Post Primary convention - elects the Democratic National Committee male and female representatives.

When I hear Trump and others talking about his “patriots” I want to vomit. If they read their American history, they would realize the sacrifice ordinary citizens made to get away from the King’s rule. No uniforms, no supplies, no food, sickness and misery and death for eight years. Those idiots who stormed the Capital.
We know our WHY, the stakes are HIGH. I ask you as you make your New Year’s resolution, to check your resolve. We need you and I will see you on the trail.

Dear Friends,
I want to thank all who attended the “Year End Celebration”. We had a very good time and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We had a wonderful food spread put out by Mykonos Restaurant. We had special guests: Marisol Enriquez, DPBC Chair, Abby Foster, candidate for City Council District 4, Marian Matthews, representative for House District 27 and Greg Seeley, candidate for Senate district 18. And I want to give a special shout out to Tom Collier for bring that fun game. We even got a little rowdy in the process. For those how could not make it, you missed a really good party. There is always next year.
On a more serious note, Trump, the leading Republican candidate, is saying that he will be a dictator on day 1, and MAGA trumpers are fine with that. The US Congress has Republicans who literally want to throw out our democracy and turn this country into a fascist state. We have Republican City Councilors here at home who have dismantled our Air Quality Control Board, allowing polluters to dump their toxic materials with total disregard for the air, water and soil contamination, at their hearts content, all in name of economic development.
These are threatening times and we have to make a commitment to work to support Democrats, even if they are not 99.4% pure. The Republican side is too dangerous, too cruel, too archaic, and too regressive to be in power in this country.
So, on that note, I want to wish you all a happy holiday and may we all have a happy NEW YEAR.
